Leo George Schreiner passed away peacefully at the age of 89, in his home, surrounded by family on Monday, January 1, 2024, after being diagnosed with colon cancer at Thanksgiving.
Leo was born on October 26, 1934, in Tiffin Ohio to Leo J. and Bernadette T. (Wilhelm) Schreiner. He was raised on the family farm in Republic Ohio in the same house in which he died. Leo attended Reed Assumption Catholic School and graduated from Attica High School in 1953. On May 5, 1962, Leo married the love of his life, Shirley (Seeholzer) Schreiner, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Kelleys Island.
Leo worked on the family farm and was always a farmer at heart continuing this passion throughout his life. He went to work at the General Electric Lamp Plant in Bellevue in 1953 and worked there until its closing in 1985. He also served in the United States Army. Upon retirement he was elected as a Reed Township Trustee for 16 years, working on the roads, plowing snow, obtaining grant funds and sitting on the AVR Fire Board. As many will remember he enjoyed working with his good friend, Guysie Huffman, in electrical and plumbing. You could always find him tinkering in his shop or the garden, on the lawn mower and washing his vehicles. Most importantly “Papa” loved caring for his grandchildren. He was very proud of them and their many accomplishments. Leo was also known to break out his patented dance moves and would add much joy and life to the party.
He was a member of St. Gaspar Catholic Church, the Seven Saints Knights of Columbus, American Legion and Fraternal Order of Eagles #490.
Leo is survived by his children, Patricia (Arthur) Page, Jane (John) Blum, Theresa (Dennis) Shank, Scott (Kimberly) Schreiner and his eleven grandchildren, Jennifer Blum, Jacob Blum, Hannah (Brandon) Hull, Jalissa (Austin) Markwell, Gavin (Danielle) Shank, Olivia and Claire Shank, Leo, Carmen, Grayson and Landry Schreiner; his great-grandchildren Melanie Blum, Jayden Markwell, Gabriel Adkins and one arriving in March; his three siblings Charles (Pat) Schreiner, Kenneth (Jane) Schreiner and Allan (Shirley) Schreiner; and many special nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Leo was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, their infant son Joseph, a granddaughter Laura Shank, a great-granddaughter Evelyn Adkins and his brother Raymond Schreiner.
